Official GM Hall Logo
Gilbert Murray Hall, or simply
'GM', is one of the Halls of Residence at Leicester
University, and a happy home to me during the whole of my
time there.
Social events at GM were run by
a Junior Common Room Committee (JCRC) in return for an
annual subscription from all residents. During 1990/91 I
was the JCR Treasurer.
The University has some information on
Halls of Residence here.

Gilbert Murray House This building was the hub of all social
activities, housing the Bar, TV Rooms, Shop, Pool Tables
and Video Games including Star Force and Legendary
Warrior.
Some of the goings on during 1990/91
are shown here.
|
GM Bar This scene shows the bar in 1991, following
reconstruction during the winter of 1990/91 when
extensive dry rot was discovered in GM House.
It also shows me enjoying a bottle of
Diamond White, my favourite tipple at the time!
|
Star Force The Star Force game was a part of the furniture
in GM House for at least six or seven years. Incredibly
addictive, it was fortunate indeed it only cost 10p a go.
|
Stoughton Leys Colloquially
known as Sleys this Edwardian House forms the furthest
outpost of GM Hall.
Room No.9, at top right in this picture
was my home during the first year (October 1988 to June
1989).
|
Stapleford This scene shows more typical accommodation.
These blocks were built in 1960's and were expected to
last five years. They are still standing today!
Stapleford is to the left and Somerby stretches away to
the right behind the tree.
Room No.28, at top left, was my home
for the second and third years (October 1989 to June
1991).
|
1990/91 Hall T-shirt Each year the hall had an official T-shirt. The
1990/91 edition, modelled here by Graham Mills, featured
the wording "MARTIN COOK Says: "Geeeee
Mmmeerrr" GILBERT MURRAY HALL 1990-91". It is
now believed to be a collectors item ;-)

Music
Undoubtedly the greatest single to be
released during my time at GM was World in Motion, by
England and New Order. Click here for a sample (81K
wav file).
